PERSONAL PROSE:
Monair J. Hamilton has taught in the field of Health Promotion on the college level for close to 7 years and has been recognized for achievements in teaching. Finding it difficult to separate the roles of service, teaching, learning and research as discrete entities, all of her work regardless of setting, audience, method, or design, is inspired by her drive and commitment to excellence in the professoriate. Regardless of the level or number of students per semester, Monair approaches all instructional activities as an opportunity for a reciprocal teaching and learning exchange. She has come to view her classroom as a community of learners. Recognizing that simply preparing a good lesson plan is not enough to become an effective professor, she continues to improve by utilizing new teaching strategies and techniques -always trying to reach students in different ways, while striving to be a better teacher and citizen of the academe.
The scholarship activities that Monair embraces primarily focus on the issues of health disparities and cardiovascular health among African-American women. In October 2003 and again in October 2004, the National office of the American Heart Association in Dallas, Texas invited her to speak on the topics of cardiovascular health in minority populations and cultural competence in health services.
Monair has been awarded for her leadership in community agencies and university committees, and her service in numerous organizations. In August 2004, Monair accepted her current position, Assistant Professor of Health Promotion at Coastal Carolina University, Conway, South Carolina, where she is full-time faculty.
